WHY LETNÁ? WHY RIGHT NOW?

No one can believe that the government’s intentions are pure. After all, key pieces of legislation are not passed at 4:36 AM without proper debate.

At 4:36 AM, mafia bosses and dictatorial juntas are at work. At 4:36 AM, the radio station is under fire and Russian tanks are rolling in. At 4:36 AM, the Gestapo and the communist secret police were on the prowl. And we refuse to allow our country to be governed in this brutal manner!

If the government majority was able to act this way, what will be next? 

The overnight attempt to bring Czech Television and Czech Radio under control is not an isolated incident, but the culmination of a worrying pattern: purges within the security services, the downplaying of Russian threats, the questioning of the work of the intelligence services and the judiciary, the disregard for experts, attacks on culture, nature and civil society, the misuse of subsidies, and the vetting of journalists.

We must stand up to this now – before it is too late.

OUR 3 DEMANDS ON THE GOVERNMENT

1) Hands off the media! Admit your mistake, withdraw Klempíř’s bill, which threatens the independence of Czech Television and Czech Radio – and stop meddling with the public service media. A free press must not be held to a government leash.   

2) Never again any ‘4:36’! Apologise to all citizens of the Czech Republic for the arrogant ‘4:36’ incident and promise them that you will not destroy the pillars of democracy – neither the media, nor the judiciary, nor civil society, nor culture, nor nature – and that nothing like your brutal ‘4:36’ will ever be repeated on any issue! 

3) Genuine dialogue with the public: Andrej Babiš is spreading lies about us, claiming that we are not interested in a proper debate on the funding of public service media. Our call from the summer of 2026 for a public debate still stands – and we believe that Andrej Babiš will finally accept it. Citizens have the right to ask questions of those who govern them.

This is nothing radical. Given what government politicians have done, these are merely basic requirements of civic and political decency. However, if they ignore them and continue to turn their backs on a large section of our society, they will see nothing but growing anger.

There has always been only one thing that has stood up to the arrogance of power – packed streets and the clear resistance of civil society. Perseverance, calm and hope. On Sunday November 15th, we will therefore transform Letná into a symbol of our strength and determination.

Invite your family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. Tell everyone that we will not let a free Czech Republic be taken away from us. This is no longer just about the media, but about whether we will remain a normal democratic country, where politicians behave as temporary stewards, or as its owners who can do whatever they like, whenever they like – even at 4:36 AM.

THERE’S A LOT AT STAKE NOW!

It is absolutely vital that Letná is packed to the rafters and that all sections of society are represented there. Many of you have written to us saying that even people in your neighbourhood who have never been to a demonstration before have woken up to the issue and are now angry. It is precisely these people we must focus on – please speak to them and invite them along.

It could well be the biggest Letná rally in the history of the Czech Republic.
